Covington Notary Public Glossary – Accession

Accession is defined in the Louisiana Civil Code Article 483. It refers to:

“Acquiring title to additions or improvements to property as a result of natural growth, labor, the annexation of fixtures or the accretion of alluvial deposits along the banks of streams”

In other words, this means that if you own a piece of property, under normal circumstances, you also become the owner of the things that grow on the property and the things that you build on the property.

Be aware that if someone else builds something on your property and you know about this action, they might have a claim to remove the item which they built.
